The enzyme is involved in the mevalonate pathway in Archaea . The activity has also been identified in the plant Mentha piperita (peppermint) . It is strictly specific for ATP but can use other phosphate acceptors such as prenyl phosphate, geranyl phosphate, or fosfomycin.
