phthalate + NADH + H+ + O2 = cis-4,5-dihydroxycyclohexa-1(6),2-diene-1,2-dicarboxylate + NAD+ reduced phthalate dioxygenase reductase first interacts with phthylate dioxygenase and reduces the Rieske [2Fe-2S]center. Phthalate and O2 then bind reversibly and reduced phthalate dioxygenase transfers one more electron to the enzyme Burkholderia cepacia
