The enzyme's activity has been demonstrated in the bacterium Thiobacillus thioparus E6. The methanethiol formed is eventually oxidized to sulfate and carbon dioxide, and the latter assimilated for autotrophic growth.

The expected taxonomic range for this enzyme is: Thiobacillus thioparus
