physiological function overexpression decreases the accumulation of toxic glycolate in a cyanobacterial photorespiratory mutant and restores its ability to grow in air. A lactate oxidase-deficient Nostoc sp. mutant grows normally in nitrate-containing medium but dies under N2-fixing conditions.
