malfunction the absence of enzyme activity leads to a lack of modification of cytidine34 to lysidine in tRNA2IleLAU, (i.e. synthesis of tRNA2IleCAU), thereby rendering it inactive for translation of AUA codons. Strains of Bacillus subtilis carrying a deletion in the TilS gene can survive only in the presence of a mutant tRNA1Ile, whose anticodon wobble position is changed from G34 to U34 (tRNA1IleUAU) Bacillus subtilis
